Is Having Good Health Just A Matter of Good Genes?
Most of us know someone who is always the picture of health, brimming over with vitality. These folks are fit and trim, energetic, good natured, positive thinkers who tirelessly give of themselves to their family, work and community. When others think of them it's usually in terms of "what a lucky guy", "not a care in the world", "he's blessed with good genes", "she's so full of life", "how does she do it all?", "she's got great genetics", "his mind's as sharp as a tack", etc., etc.
While being blessed with "good genes" unquestionably improves the chances of living a physically and mentally fit life, it doesn't guarantee it. For the vast majority of us, it's not so much what we're born with but rather the good or bad ways we treat our bodies throughout life that determines our physical and mental fitness.
Not only is the answer to the title question a "no", it's a resounding "No". People who enjoy a fit, healthy life earn it by hard work, good habits and continuous learning. They exercise and eat right to maintain that fit, lean body mass. They understand that having a sound body and mind means learning about their changing nutritional and other bodily needs as they age, then taking the steps to maintain or improve their fitness. They exercise their minds as well as their bodies. They practice good hygiene. They don't smoke, and they don't over indulge in anything.
It's really pretty simple. So, why then are there so many obese people, so many depressed people and so many sick people?
It's not a rude question, but rather a very important one. It's important not only in regard to the health of overweight people, but to the health of our entire country. Obesity is epidemic in the U.S., having doubled in the adult population in the last 30 years. Obesity is second only to smoking as the leading cause of hospitalization and death due to preventable disease. Overweight and obesity are a major cause of the skyrocketing cases of diabetes, cancer, cardio-pulmonary disease, depression, anxiety, and stroke in the U.S. The strain of this on the nation's economic and social well-being is immeasurable and totally unacceptable.
The sad fact is that 64% of the baby boomers in the U.S. are ranked as being overweight or obese. Sixty-four percent! Even sadder is many of those in our age group, 46-64 years old, will die prematurely simply because they over eat, eat the wrong foods and don't exercise. This isn't just our opinion at Woodmor's, it is undeniable fact.
But, it isn't our role at Woodmor's to lecture and we are not experts in the health and wellness field. Does Your Health Provider Offer e-Mail Consultation?
Like the rest of us, most doctors are on the web frequently for a host of reasons. Many offices around the country have now opened a new channel with their patients by offering email communications for non-emergency consultations. In some cases this service is available on a limited basis only, such as for immobile patients or those in post-op home or hospice recovery, while other offices and clinics avail themselves to the queries of a broader patient base. If e-mail consultation would be a valuable service to you or perhaps to an elderly parent, then ask your health provider's office if it is available and what their specific policies are.
Some fundamentals you need to follow when using this service are:
E-Mailing your doctor is a privilege, don't abuse it. Doctors offer this service as a convenience to their patients and as a means of reducing their patient office load, thereby allowing more individual time with those patients needing it. Keep your messages brief, to the point and on a professional level. The doctor's email is not a venue for forwarding jokes, news snippets, images, or even medical articles you've read on the internet. Abuse the privilege and you'll most likely lose it.
Use the E-Mail for routine matters. Such things as lab results, prescription refills, specialist referrals, setting appointments, and so on are what the service is best used for. If you have a question about specific, non-critical symptoms you are having, or a pre-diagnosed condition the doctor is treating you for, then keep it simple and focused on just that issue. Be sure to always include your basic information i.e., name, d.o.b., patient number, and pharmacy if asking about a refill.
Your doctor is obviously an extremely busy person with many demands on his or her time so don't expect a quick reply to your email. Figure on having an answer within 24-72 hours at best. If you're asking about a prescription refill then send the e-mail several days in advance of needing the medication.
Never text your doctor unless you've been given specific instruction and permission to do so.
If It's Serious, Don't Use e-Mail. Use the phone if you have an emergency condition such as sudden, unexplained chest or abdominal pains, a painful or new symptom or any other urgent health issue. Call 911 if you have an emergency or the doctor's office if it's about a sudden change in your condition.
E-Mails Sent to Your Doctor's Office May Be Read by Other Staff. It's important to realize that your doctor may not be the only person reading messages sent to the office. Very often office staff will pre-screen patient emails to save the doctor's valuable time. For that reason don't include credit card or other private information, and never discuss anything which would embarrass you if it were made public.

Managing Hypertension: A Clinically Proven Alternative Treatment
If you happen to be one of the millions of people living with high blood pressure (hypertension), then you're aware of the dangers of leaving it unchecked and unmanaged. Many of us with this condition have had success controlling it under a doctor's supervision using prescription drugs, weight loss, tobacco use cessation, and restricting our salt intake. However, many people have been unable to significantly reduce their blood pressure even with these measures. Others have simply failed to adhere to the prescribed regimes or have an adversity to taking the medication due to inherent side effects.
For those who have not succeeded in lowering their blood pressure, or who would prefer a more natural treatment rather than a pharmaceutical one, there is a new clinically tested naturopathic product available online. Marketed as AlistrolTM by Alistrol Health, Inc. of Bellingham, WA, the product is a patented herbal dietary supplement specifically formulated to lower blood pressure.
According to the maker:
The organically grown herbs used in AlistrolTM are Holly Leaf Extract, Daikon Seed Extract, Hawthorne Berry Extract, and Garlic Extract. All four have been shown in numerous studies to have beneficial effects on cardio-vascular health.
"Alistrol works for some people who have tried many other remedies without success. It has no known interactions with prescription high- blood-pressure medicines; you don't have to risk stopping your other therapies in order to try out Alistrol.
Alistrol's ingredients are believed to protect arterial walls from damage that can result from the buildup of plaque, and also to help the body to use oxygen more effectively by stimulating coronary blood vessels to dilate or expand. When blood vessels are dilated, they are carrying oxygen, blood, and nutrients throughout the body more effectively to all of the vital organs. Dilating blood vessels also helps the heart to use minerals such as calcium; calcium in particular plays a very important role in the biochemical processes that allow the cardiovascular system to function properly. Use Alistrol for blood pressure remedies."
